River Avon
I have been very busy recently. I know this because I have not been fishing as often as I want to, no, need to. This is a problem. Well today I decided I had to solve this pernicious problem. So I set off for the River Avon, thinking the Wye would be overly busy on a bank holiday weekend.
The Avon was almost deserted. I fished one section without seeing another soul. Mind you I didn't see many flies and even fewer trout. There were still a few grannom about and the very occasional rise. I can tell you exactly how many, 4 fish and about 10 rises were seen over a half mile section in a period of two hours. Not ideal dry fly fishing conditions. However as you probably know, on many chalkstreams there is a dry-fly-only rule before mid summer. And so it was here. And so I spent a long time casting dry flies to the very few fish that had shown themselves.
I had one rise, one strike and caught one fish. It was an excellent large overwintered brown trout that had been stocked last year. Though thin, it was strong as befits a fish that has spent months in the river. After my fishy moment, I walked the beat up and down twice without seeing another fish. It was the right time to go home.
Where are the rises?
